As the fifth volume to emerge from a series of workshops held under the auspices of the European Social Science Fisheries Network, this one based on a 1998 ESSFiN conference continues the identification and analysis of key issues of social science interest relating to fisheries management in Atlantic Europe and North America. In his introductory chapter, Symes (geography, U. of Hull, UK) explains how fisheries dependent regions serve as a barometer for the state of fisheries and parallel the disadvantages of agriculturally-based rural areas coping with modernization. Other contributors further characterize the problems of these regions; investigate selected aspects of their economic, social, and cultural challenges; and assess the socioeconomic impacts of fisheries policy. In conclusion, chapter 19 shifts from problem analysis to consideration of the future of stimulating adaptive developments. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
