INTRODUCTION TO GREEK PHILOSOPHY, AN

The originality and creativity of Greek philosophy established it as the foundation of Western culture, and ensures its continuing relevance today. Here is an introductory guide to the whole course of ancient Greek philosophical thought from its first beginnings in Ionia in the 6th century BC down to the emergence of Neoplatonism in the 3rd century AD.
Individual thinkers and their systems are presented in chronological sequence, from Thales to Plotinus, with frequent mention of lesser-known figures. The author analyzes the whole range of Greek philosophy, from dogmatism to scepticism and from idealism to empiricism, including the Sophistic movement, Stoicism and Epicureanism. 'Natural philosphy', the rational and scientific school of thought culminating in atomism, is given particular attention. Historical background is provided where relevant, as well as biographical data on the often fascinating lives and personalities of the ancient philosophers.
