In German occupied Tanzania on the eve of World War I, soldiers are rounding up indigenous communities. The indomitable Rose Sayer, spurred into action by the death of her brother, is determined to fight back. Enlisting the help of hard-bitten skipper and drunk, Charlie Allnutt, she hitches a ride on his rickety steamboat, the African Queen.
